HIGHLIGHTS

Snow Peak Wildlife Management Area

  • The Snow Peak WMA is open to public use year round and is enjoyed by a wide variety of recreational users – backpackers, hikers, photographers, hunters and fishermen.
  • One of Idaho’s largest roadless areas, access to this old growth habitat is provided through six trailheads.
  • Just north of the Malard Larkin Pioneer Area, most all of Idaho’s huntable big game species are found in the Snow Peak WMA.
  • Home to an excellent population of mountain goats that has become an important source of transplant stock. Offspring from the Snow Peak mountain goat herd are spread throughout the western United States.
  • Elk are another important species in the area. Topography, climate, and fire history combine to create excellent elk habitat, including 2500 acres of critical winter range.
  • Pockets of old growth western red cedar and western hemlock along drainage bottom provide habitat for some of Idaho's less common bird and mammal species such as pine marten, northern goshawks and pileated woodpeckers.
  • Excellent fishing with populations of westslope cutthroat trout.
