What's Involved?

A total of 53 separate non-federal and federal parcels

Non-federal Parcels

  • 25 separate, isolated non-federal parcels located within national forest boundaries

  • Size ranges from 10 acres to 283 acres

  • 2,800 total acres

Federal Parcels

  • 28 separate, isolated federal parcels

  • Size ranges from 1.9 acres to 703 acres

  • 2,870 total acres

Where?

Four National Forests in Idaho:

  • Idaho Panhandle National Forests

  • Clearwater National Forest

  • Payette National Forest

  • Salmon-Challis National Forests

Seven Ranger Districts:

  • Priest Lake, Sandpoint, Coeur d’Alene River, St. Joe, Palouse, McCall & Middle Fork

Exchange Objectives

  • To protect threatened & endangered native and anadromous fisheries.

  • To improve management of national forest land, reduce boundary lines, and resolve trespass and access problems.

  • To preserve and protect critical areas in the Wild & Scenic River corridor along the South Fork of the Salmon River and in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness along the Middle Fork of the Salmon River.

  • To provide hunting and fishing access and to secure important fish and wildlife habitat through acquisition of conservation easements and/or fee title.

  • To preserve roadless areas for the protection of wildlife.

  • To protect and enhance water quality at Priest Lake by enabling local communities to expand and improve water and sewer treatment facilities to meet environmental requirements.

  • To consolidate and enhance management of the University of Idaho Experimental Forest.

  • To dispose of scattered, isolated tracts of federal lands that have marginal natural resource values and lack legal public access.
